Military hero Colin Powell rose from humble beginnings in New York Citys impoverished South Bronx. Raised by immigrant Jamaican parents, he learned early in life to identify goals and find ways to achieve them. Powell later served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under presidents Bush and Clinton, and as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush. Powell believes the most effective goals are the simplest. He tells the story of Napoleon Bonaparte, who occasionally mingled with the troops and asked the lowest-level soldier to explain the armys overall mission. Bonaparte believed that if the lowest soldier could understand it, the mission was clear. Company executives often spend months composing elaborate mission statements that few employees can understand. As a leader, once you have a sense of direction you then have the opportunity to select simple straight forward goals which are easily understood and have the highest potential for success. |
Pre-engineered building roof panels are connected to the building by attaching to roof framing members known as purlins. The connection is either direct as with a panel screwed directly to the purlin, or indirect as with a two part clip attached to the purlin with the roof panels crimped onto the upper, movable part of the clip. This latter system, referred to as a standing seam roof, is a top of the line product which allows the roof panels to "float" in response to thermal movement, reducing stress on the building as well as the roof panels. Varco-Pruden, a leader in pre-engineered building technology, now offers a roof system which incorporates the economies of a panel rib roof with the ability to move freely in response to thermal expansion and contraction. The system utilizes a two part slider assembly. The bottom part of the assembly is attached directly to the purlins while the rib roof panel is screwed directly to the upper, movable part.
