A new car wash is set to open on Jackson’s west side in February 2003. The new facility, located at the corner of Laurence and Wildwood Streets features four self-wash bays along with two state-of-the-art "touchless" automatic wash bays. O’Harrow Construction Co. was selected to provide full scope, single source design/build services. In this case, the scope of service included assistance with permit acquisitions. The building itself consists of masonry wall construction with a wood roof truss system and architectural metal roofing. Interior finishes will be exposed to a damp environment and on that basis, an FRP panel system was selected to resist moisture and corrosion. The construction schedule for this project was 14 weeks. O’Harrow met both schedule and budget objectives for the owner in spite of this being constructed entirely during the winter weather. Owner of the facility is HUFFCO Properties, LLC. In certain industrial processes, dust control is of the utmost importance. Two examples of these processes are grain handling/milling and magnesium die casting. Under the right (or wrong) conditions, dust from these processes can result in an explosion or hard to control fire. One area in which the design/builder can help the owner minimize the potential for dust accumulation is to provide an interior liner panel in the process area. The liner panel, which is generally a light gage metal product, eliminates many of the surfaces such as beam flanges where dust tends to accumulate. The painted surface of the liner panel reflects light, which can reduce lighting costs and improve working conditions. O’Harrow is experienced in liner panel design and installation. The February issue of Engineering Times Magazine reported that under a new Federal Highway Administration rule, recipients in the federal-aid highway program are now able to use the design/build project delivery system for new highway construction. This represents an important step in government’s adoption of the design/build process. Private industry has long known that design/build saves time, saves money and eliminates the adversarial relationships spawned by the design-bid-build process.
